Security tightened ahead of Solomons PM vote

HONIARA -- Security was tightened in the Solomon Islands capital Honiara on Monday in a bid to avoid a repeat of last year’s politically-inspired riots in a new prime ministerial poll in three days time. Dozens of businesses were destroyed and the nation left in turmoil when the man elected premier 18 months ago resigned following violence that saw dozens of businesses destroyed following the vote.

Legislators will gather on Thursday to elect a new political leader for the impoverished South Pacific nation, following a successful no confidence vote against last serving Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare last week.
