Killing Fields court dismisses Duch bail bid

PHNOM PENH -- Cambodia’s “Killing Fields” tribunal refused bail to chief Khmer Rouge inquisitor Duch on Monday, saying he had to stay in jail for his own safety and the need to “preserve public order”.

Judge Prak Kimsan, one of five on the court’s pre-trial chamber, said Cambodia had had to wait 30 years for justice and could not afford to release the 66-year-old, who is expected to be key witness at the trial of Pol Pot’s top henchmen.

“Provisional detention is necessary to protect the safety of the charged person himself because he will be brought to stand trial around June 2008,” he told a hearing at the US$56 million tribunal into the atrocities committed by Pol Pot’s regime.
