NZ lawmaker sent to trial on corruption, other charges

WELLINGTON, New Zealand -- A former Cabinet minister will be New Zealand's first lawmaker to stand trial on bribery, corruption and other criminal charges, a judge ruled Friday. Taito Phillip Field is facing 40 charges, including 15 for bribery and corruption and 25 for attempting to obstruct or pervert the course of justice.

After hearing four weeks of evidence from 50 witnesses at a pre-trial hearing, District Court Judge Charles Blackie ruled that a case had been established against the lawmaker and sent him to the High Court for trial. The bribery and corruption charges each carry a maximum prison sentence of seven years.
