Intel invests US$16 mill to boost WiMAX rollout

KUALA LUMPUR -- U.S. chipmaker Intel Corp. said Monday its venture capital arm has invested 50 million ringgit (US$16 million; euro10 million) in Malaysia’s Green Packet Berhad to help develop the country’s first nationwide high-speed WiMAX network. Green Packet’s unit, Packet One Networks, is expected to roll out Malaysia’s first WiMAX broadband service by June 2008, which promises faster wireless Web connection speeds for laptops and cell phones than mobile operators’ third-generation networks.

“Intel is committed to the deployment of WiMAX globally and momentum for WiMAX is strong,” its Executive Vice President Arvind Sodhani said in a statement.
