S. Korea's Lee says alleged nepotism scandal unacceptable

SEOUL- Minister Yu Myung-Hwan offered on Saturday to quit after being accused of nepotism over the controversial hiring of his daughter for a mid-level post at his ministry.

He was the fourth official in a week to offer to resign over ethical questions, dealing another political blow to Lee's conservative administration.

The resignation offer comes at an awkward time, as South Korea prepares to host a G-20 summit in November. Relations with North Korea are also tense after Seoul accused its neighbor of a deadly attack on a South Korean warship.

A presidential spokesman told AFP they were reviewing Yu's offer to quit but had not officially accepted it yet.

Lee, a former construction executive who is midway through his five-year term, has launched a drive for a “fair society” and said Sunday that civil servants and others should observe it.

“Civil servants as well as those who are powerful and rich should make greater efforts to make this society fairer,” he said while meeting his ministers and vice ministers at a policy workshop.

Lee expressed regret at Yu's case.

“In the past, his case could have been dismissed as a longstanding practice,” he said in remarks reported by his office.

“By the fair society standards, however, the scandal cannot be acceptable.”
