5 North Korean defectors in Thailand leave for U.S.

SEOUL, South Korea -- Five North Korean defectors left Thailand for the United States early Friday, becoming the latest people accepted by Washington under a 2004 law that assists refugees from the communist nation, an activist said. The four women and one man were traveling to the United States via South Korea, the Rev. Chun Ki-won, head of the Seoul-based missionary group Durihana Mission, told The Associated Press.

They had been in Thailand for nearly two years after escaping North Korea between 2002 and 2006.
