South Korea seeks English lessons for rural schools

SEOUL, South Korea -- South Korea is wooing overseas Koreans fluent in English to teach the language in their homeland.

The Education Ministry said Wednesday it has published advertisements in 20 cities in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Britain seeking Korean college students interested in teaching English at elementary schools.

The ministry plans to hire about 500 people to teach after-school classes in rural establishments that lack English instruction from native speakers. The teachers will be paid about 1.9 million won (US$1,920; euro1,213) per month.

New President Lee Myung-bak has pledged to strengthen English education at public schools. Korean parents spend vast sums on private English tutors for their children.
