Japanese fighter jet pilot missing after F-15 crash

TOKYO -- A Japanese fighter jet pilot was missing after his F-15 crashed in the East China Sea during a training flight on Tuesday, Japan's Defense Ministry said.

Thirteen military aircraft and several ships as well as three Japan coast guard patrol ships were deployed to search for pilot Yuji Kawakubo, 37, the official said.

"The ministry confirmed that the fighter jet crashed," said the official who asked not to be named.

The pilot, flying alone, sent an emergency signal around 10:33 a.m., and his jet disappeared off the radar about 180 kilometers (110 miles) northwest of Naha city on Okinawa island, an air force spokesman said.

A military search plane later spotted a tail section of the jet in the sea, together with an oil slick and smoke.

"We have found several parts, but the aircraft itself has not yet been found," the spokesman said.
