U.S., Japan to cooperate on non-proliferation

TOKYO -- U.S. President Barack Obama and Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama promised on Friday close cooperation on nuclear non-proliferation and Japan agreed to host a conference in January on nuclear security.

The two leaders agreed that it was vital for Iran and North Korea to uphold their international obligations on their nuclear programs, the governments said in a joint statement.

They urged North Korea to return to six-party talks and urged Iran to work to restore international confidence regarding its nuclear activities.

“The government of Japan and the government of the United States of America welcome the renewed international attention and commitment to achieve the peace and security of a world without nuclear weapons and confirm their determination to realize such a world,” the governments said.
