Strong typhoon heads to Japan: weather agency

TOKYO -- A strong typhoon was heading in the Pacific Ocean towards Japan on Monday but it looked set to narrowly miss landfall, the meteorological agency said. Typhoon Rammasun, which means "god of thunder" in Thai, was moving to the northeast with gusts of up to 194 kilometers per hour as of 12:00 p.m. (0300 GMT).

It was on course to come near the Tokyo region on Tuesday, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. The storm will most likely stay in the Pacific Ocean before dissolving, although a warning was still issued for areas near Tokyo, it said.
