Japanese woman flushes her baby down toilet: police

TOKYO -- A Japanese woman who flushed her baby down the toilet was arrested on charges of abandonment on Sunday, police said. Ritsuko Taniguchi, a 33 year-old resident in the central Japan city of Nagoya, gave birth three months prematurely in her apartment’s toilet on Saturday, a local police spokesman said.

“She allegedly did not rescue the baby (from the lavatory basin) and abandoned him,” the official said, confirming the baby’s death. Her attempt to flush away the baby, a 880-gram (30.8-ounce) boy, did not succeed as he blocked the toilet, the police official added.
