TOKYO -- A fire and a signal fault delayed more than 600,000 Japanese commuters Thursday, with thous

ands forced out of their carriages to walk along the tracks in the rain.

Trains stopped running on the Chuo Line, one of the most crowded routes through the Japanese capital, around 8:00 a.m. (2300 GMT) after a fire at a railway facility, a spokesman for operator East Japan Railway said. Commuters jumped out of trains and formed long lines on the rails in the rain to walk to the nearest station, TV news reports showed.
