Japanese colonel suspected of press leak: reports

TOKYO -- A Japanese air force colonel is facing criminal action for leaking confidential information to a newspaper, reports said Wednesday. Military police have filed papers with the Tokyo District Public Prosecutors’ Office without keeping the 50-year-old intelligence officer in custody, Jiji Press and other media reported.

The air force colonel, whose name was withheld, is suspected of leaking details about a Chinese submarine incident to a reporter, a violation of military law, the reports said. He is suspected of giving a reporter from the Yomiuri Shimbun, a leading daily newspaper, information in May 2005 that a Chinese submarine was in trouble in the South China Sea due to a fire.
