Indonesian president vows to fight 'Court Mafia'

JAKARTA -- Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono vowed Thursday to crack down on judicial corruption after wiretap evidence exposed an alleged high-level conspiracy to frame anti-graft fighters.

But the president, who was re-elected in July, made no mention of what action would be taken against the officials incriminated by the recordings, amid calls for the police chief and the attorney general to resign.

“It will be our priority in the first 100-day program of this government to eradicate the 'Court Mafia',” he told reporters.

“I urge Indonesian people who have become victims of this mafia to make reports. Let's eradicate this mafia so that we uphold the law,” he said.

The deputy attorney general is also expected to resign over the scandal, which has gripped the Southeast Asian country for weeks.
