Bird flu kills 2 people in Indonesia, bringing country's death toll to 107

JAKARTA, Indonesia -- Two more people have died of bird flu in Indonesia, bringing the death toll in the country worst hit by the virus to 107, the health ministry said Monday.

One of the victims was a 15-year-old boy and the second was a 12-year-old girl, ministry official Lily Sulistyowati said. Both died last week and lived in separate suburbs of the capital, Jakarta, she said.

The source of the infections was being investigated, she added.

Indonesia has regularly recorded human deaths from bird flu since the virus began ravaging poultry stocks across Asia in 2003.

Bird flu remains hard for people to catch, but health experts worry the virus could mutate into a form that passes easily among humans, possibly triggering a pandemic. So far most human cases have been linked to contact with infected birds.

Scientists have warned that Indonesia, which has millions of backyard chickens and poor medical facilities, is a potential hot spot for a global bird flu pandemic.
