Indian navy officer dies in gas leak on destroyer

NEW DELHI -- An Indian navy commander died and four dockworkers were sickened Friday by a gas leak on a destroyer being built in a Mumbai dockyard, in the latest accident to befall the Indian navy.

After a deadly fire on a submarine last week, navy chief Adm. D.K. Joshi resigned to take responsibility for the string of accidents.

Friday's gas leak was caused by a malfunction in a carbon dioxide unit on the destroyer, state-owned Mazagon Dock Limited said in a statement. It said that the ill workers were hospitalized.

The four are dockyard workers, a navy official said on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to talk to reporters.
