Australia's PM Turnbull lampoons Trump in leaked audio

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has lampooned U.S. President Donald Trump in an audio that was leaked to the Australian media on Thursday.

In the audio, made public by Channel Nine television, Turnbull is heard making fun of his meeting with the president in New York last month, which Trump postponed by several hours and also cut short.

"It was beautiful. It was the most beautiful putting-me-at-ease ever," Turnbull says.

He also does a caricature of Trump, saying both of them were "winning in the polls."

"The Donald and I, we are winning and winning in the polls. We are winning so much. We are winning, like we have never won before," he says in the video.

"We are winning... not in the fake polls. We are winning in the real polls, like the online polls. They are so easy to win. I know that. I have this Russian guy. Believe me, it's true."

The prime minister's stab at comedy comes as Turnbull and Trump both suffer from low numbers in public opinion polls in their respective countries.

Turnbull and Trump had a bumpy start with a now infamous phone conversation in January after the U.S. leader took office. In that phone call, the two spoke about a refugee swap deal between the two countries secured by the administration of former U.S. president Barack Obama.

Trump, who said the deal was "dumb," reportedly said it was the worst telephone call by far.

Turnbull's tongue-in-cheek speech at Parliament House's annual Mid-Winter Ball in the Australian capital Canberra on Wednesday was off the record, but an Australian journalist, who did not attend the event, made it public.
