South Pole conqueror's missing letter is foundRoald Amundsen's letter, accepting honorary membership of the Derwent Sailing Squadron shortly after his March 1912 conquest of Antarctica, was discovered by chance at the club's headquarters in Hobart, Tasmania. “We were in the process of archiving some files and moving some filing cabinets,” manager Anthony Ellis told public broadcaster ABC Monday. “Lo and behold the letter emerged from behind a filing cabinet. We think it had been there at least two or three years because it was on loan to the Tasmania Museum and Art Gallery and was collected from them in 2007. “Due to a change in management here it was just forgotten about.” Amundsen was feted in Hobart when news broke of his achievement. The explorer spent 13 days in the city, his first port of call after the Antarctic, after rowing ashore there to telegraph his country's king. The rival party led by Britain's Scott reached the South Pole after Amundsen. All five of them died on the return journey. | |||||||||||||
