A suspected bomb has been discovered near the Fukushima nuclear plant

TOKYO — A suspected bomb has been spotted at a construction site near the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant.

A worker found the suspected bomb Thursday morning when digging up the ground in a car park about 1 kilometer from damaged reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, operator Tokyo Electric Power said.

In March 2011, the plant suffered meltdowns in three of its six reactors after it was hit by a powerful earthquake and resulting tsunami.

The operator said on Thursday the discovery did not affect its decommissioning work at the facility.

The device is around 85 centimeters long and 15 centimeters wide, according to police officials.

Local officials told Japanese media that part of the area used to be a wartime airfield and that it was attacked by U.S. forces.
