An elderly couple were trapped for over a day in a Malaysian elevator

KUALA LUMPUR -- An elderly couple were stuck in a shopping center elevator for over 24 hours on Friday in the north-western Malaysian state of Ipoh, local media reported on Monday.

The district police officer in charge, Sum Chang Keong, confirmed to dpa that a family member of the couple, who are aged 74 and 70, lodged a police report over the incident.

According to The Star online, the shaken couple refused to communicate with anyone including the police.

They got stuck in the elevator at 0330 GMT Friday and were only rescued at 0500 GMT on Saturday by the fire and rescue department.

The Star reported a close relative as saying they are still facing trauma and have sought legal assistance.

The couple were "very weak" when they managed to escape the elevator and were taken to a hospital for treatment, reports said.

One report said that a mall sweep on Sunday saw the elevators in the shopping center shut down for maintenance work.
