Vietnam deploys police over anti-Chinese protests

HANOI -- Hundreds of police in communist Vietnam Wednesday ringed Chinese diplomatic missions where students had planned renewed protests over two disputed island chains in the South China Sea. Regular uniformed and riot police were deployed from early morning outside the Chinese embassy in Hanoi and consulate in Ho Chi Minh City where online activists had announced plans to rally on Wednesday, the annual Student’s Day. Hanoi in late December stopped a series of peaceful protests over the disputed Spratly and Paracel islands, detaining several activists, after receiving angry rebukes from Beijing for tolerating an initial rally.
