Vietnam upholds death sentence for Australian

HANOI -- A Vietnamese appeals court in southern Ho Chi Minh City has upheld the death sentence of an Australian man of Vietnamese origin for trafficking heroin, a court official said Thursday. “The appeals court of the Supreme People’s Court in Ho Chi Minh City rejected the appeal request of Tony Manh and upheld his death sentence on Wednesday,” a court clerk who asked not to be named told AFP.

Manh, 40, was sentenced to death in September by another city court for trafficking almost one kilogram (2.2 pounds) of heroin. He was caught at Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat international airport in March.
