Visa exemption for overseas Vietnamese announced

Millions of Vietnamese who live abroad can enter Vietnam without visas from Sept. 1, the government announced as part of efforts to reunite overseas Vietnamese with their homeland and attract more investment. Many of the three million Vietnamese who live in 90 countries are from families who left after the end of the Vietnam War in 1975. State media reported on Monday that the visa exemption, first announced by President Nguyen Minh Triet on a visit to the United States in June, had been approved by the government.

The reports said that overseas Vietnamese and relatives would still require a visa exemption certificate once they provide documentary proof they are ethnically Vietnamese. The certificate allows multiple entries and a stay of up to three months at a time.
