‘Kiss Me Quick’ canned for racy title

“We have had hundreds of letters,” said board director Titi Said. “The film caused unrest among the people, who say it was not in line with our society’s values.”

The low-budget flick was originally passed by the board two weeks ago and has been playing to large audiences across the world’s most populous Muslim nation.

Several Jakarta cinemas took down posters advertising the film Friday after receiving a copy of the censor board’s order.

The film contains a scene of a young couple sharing a brief meeting of the lips, but protests have apparently been sparked by its title, “Buruan Cium Gue” or “Kiss Me Quick.”

“The title clearly leads people to commit adultery,” popular Islamic cleric Abudullah Gymnastiar told Gatra magazine. “Kissing is the root of adultery.”

The controversy is unusual because Indonesian cinemas and television are full of violent American imports that contain kissing scenes. Earlier this year, a local film showing two gay men sharing a kiss was passed by censors.

Script writer Ve Handojo said the reaction to the film was “not very mature.”

“It is funny because they are reacting to the title,” he said. “Most of the protesters have not watched the movie.”
