Cirque du Soleil's 'OVO' sprouts wings to delight Taipei audiences

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- "Amazing," exclaimed Tanya. "Encore, Encore," said her 2-year-old sister, Chloe, while clapping at the whimsical creatures that unveiled a world of biodiversity and beauty filled with noisy action and moments of quiet emotion.

The two children were among the 600 guests who attended last night's preview of acclaimed performance "OVO" at the invitation of the organizers, Cirque du Soleil, United Daily News Group (聯合報系) and Far Eastern Group (遠東集團).

The show, which will premiere on Tuesday, gets its name from the word "egg" in Portuguese, a timeless symbols of life cycles and birth that represent the underlying thread of the performance. Graphically, "OVO" also hides an insect in its name: The two letters "Os" represent the eyes while the letter "V" forms the nose.

More importantly, "OVO" is where the show starts, with insects intensely curious about a mysterious egg appearing in their midst. This iconic object then impacts the colorful ecosystem where insects work, eat, crawl, flutter, play, fight and look for love in a non-stop riot of energy and movement.

Jennifer Chen, who was also in attendance, praised the "love, life, laughter, amazement, energy, lots of colors, amazing acrobatics," in addition to great uplifting music and pleasure! "It's the best entertainment for the whole family!" — she continued.

The cast is comprised of 55 performing artists from 14 countries specializing in many acrobatic acts under the leadership of artistic director Marjon Van Grunsven. This eclectic troupe reflects the diversity of this insect world where love equals life and the egg represents both. Like the foreign fly, which falls in love with the ladybug, we are the insect community that has no choice but to eventually accept this stranger into their lives.
