TAIPEI -- Taiwanese opera master Liao Chiung-chih has been invited by Taiwan's representative office in New York City to help generate interest in this traditional dramatic art form in the U.S. city.
The Taipei Cultural Center, part of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York, has asked Liao to deliver a lecture at an event to promote Taiwanese opera on Aug. 13 and will also screen an award-winning documentary about her life in which she stars.
Liao is widely hailed as Taiwan's best ku dan — a major sorrowful female character in Taiwanese opera — and the finest performer of Eastern operatic arias for her distinguished portrayal of tragic female roles.
