Wilson told Taiwanese reporters he believes Eastern and Western cultures are not separate and that he has sought to find unity of East and West through collaboration with Taiwanese artists. In 2008, Taiwan's U theater was invited to attend a workshop at the Watermill Center in New York, where Wilson invited artists from around the world to exchange artistic experiences and collaborate in theater production. Wilson said he was impressed by the story of the ancient Chinese explorer Zheng He by writer Liu Ruo-yu of the U Theatre, and decided to present the seven grand voyages of the explorer in the early 15th century on stage. The production will have a dress rehearsal Jan. 27. Emphasizing that lighting is one of the most important elements of his work, Wilson said that “light creates the space of life.” Wilson said he was especially happy to see Taiwanese performers so easily assimilate his direction into their own performance styles.
