Economic recession is influencing art events

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The economic recession is now hitting cultural and art activities hard and show organizers are sparing no effort to fill seats.

Ars Formosa Company had invited the Vienna Boys' Choir to Taiwan for several concerts. Yet this year, the box office decreased nearly 20 percent on average, and more sharply in Taipei.

The company attributed the drop to the global economic downturn, the Morakot disaster and the swine flu outbreak, according to a local media outlet.

Some art groups initiated special plans to boost or maintain attendances. Most of them have released discount offers. Paper Wind Mill decided to market their newest shows through mobile phone ads.

Those with sufficient budgets launched TV commercials endorsing the latest productions, such as “Mamma Mia!”

The Ju Percussion Group announced discounted tickets to its recent work “Play.” To boost sales, the organization also cooperated with a cosmetics manufacturer to give out samples to the audience.

Art foundations urged Emile C.J. Sheng, the CEO of the 2009 Taipei Deaflympics Organizing Committee and the newly appointed Cabinet-level Council for Cultural Affairs, to come up with practical ideas to help art events.
