Local bands at Japan's Summer Sonic festival

TOKYO -- Taiwanese bands, including Mayday, rocked the audience at this year's Summer Sonic music festival on Saturday in the Japanese cities of Tokyo and Osaka.

Rain did not dampen the spirits of Japanese music fans in Osaka, where Taiwanese rock band Mayday stirred up the crowd with three of its Japanese songs, "Dancin' Dancin'," "Do You Ever Shine?" and "Embrace," along with Mandarin hit songs, including "Li Kai Di Qiu Biao Mian" (Leaving The Face Of The Earth).

Mayday first performed at the Summer Sonic festival in 2012, becoming the first Taiwanese band to hit the stage at both the Tokyo and Osaka venues of the annual rock festival that features Japanese and international musicians.

In Tokyo, Taiwanese black metal band ChthoniC and pop-rock band Magic Power also excited fans with their music on Saturday.

ChthoniC performed "Broken Jade" and "Takao" from its album "Takasago Army" to mark "Shusen Kinenbi" (memorial day for the end of the war), which is observed on Aug. 15 in Japan each year to mark the end of World War II.

Freddy Lim, lead vocalist of the band, said although war should be eliminated, human beings should never be afraid to pursue freedom, justice and equality.

Meanwhile, Magic Power, which is participating in the festival for the first time, performed its hit songs, such as "Fighting for Love."

Mayday was scheduled to perform in Tokyo on Sunday, while ChthoniC will also play in Osaka on Sunday.

Three other Taiwanese bands — Cosmos People, LTK (Loh Tsui Kweh) Commune and APHASIA — will also take to the stage in Tokyo on Sunday.
