A mighty night
By Sean Scanlan, Special to The China PostFormed in Toronto in 2001, Fucked Up began as a hard-core super group, drawing musicians from the local scene, including the unforgettable, larger than life frontman known as Pink Eyes, (Damian Abraham). The band trudged forward for nearly a decade issuing occasional EPs and playing shows marred by lots of damage.

In 2009, Matador released the band's second album “The Chemistry of Common Life.” The album won over critics, gained acclaim and surprised many by capturing the Polaris Award for best Canadian full-length album.
The acclaim would give the band a wider audience and the license to unleash its mighty live sound and the full frontal attack of front-man Pink Eyes, who would often enter the audience shirtless, performing in full frothy fury.
Their 2011 release “David Comes to Life,” a self-billed rock opera, won even more critical acclaim leading to bigger gigs and festival dates. The band would soon ditch their touring van and play dates ranging from Latin America to Japan.
Live, the band is known for its crazy antics, mostly associated with Pink Eyes, who will soon strip to his boxers, crowd surf (only a few seconds if he is lucky), smash beer cans on his head and try pieces of clothing offered to him. He usually returns them back to the owner — in case you're worried about your favorite hat.
The band make no bones about their love of hardcore. On this tour they are bringing good mates, Gallows, from Watford, England, along for the ride.
Gallows is led by charismatic frontman, Laurent Barnard, who rivals Pink Eyes in terms of risking life and limb — either dangling from overhead balconies or impressive stage dives.
Like Pink Eyes' group, Gallows has gained acclaim for their recorded output, including a debut distributed by Epitaph Records and a subsequent Warner Bros deal.
Next Wednesday's hardcore double bill will be one mighty evening. Just bring some strong shoes and an extra t-shirt. ■
