Heavy psychedelics Boris

As Taiwan becomes further entrenched in the indie rock circuit, a number of interesting acts are now starting to wash ashore. Next week, the Japanese trio, Boris, will make their debut to the delight of local hipsters.

Formed in 1996, Boris is held in high regard by many, some even billing the group the coolest band on the planet with a devoted audience of taste makers like Jim Jarmusch and popular music blogs like Pitchfork Media and Brooklyn Vegan.

Boris wins over critics with a unique sound which veers from heavy metal to stoner rock to easy listening. It is virtually impossible to categorize the band based upon their 17 releases, albums totally unique and different, perhaps suited to an all-day shuffle on your CD carousel.

For those unfamiliar with Boris, perhaps the most apt insight into the band is that they are devoted Melvins fans, even taking their name from the opening track to "Bullhead" from this seminal grunge band out of the U.S. Northwest. And when Boris aren't touring or recording, they further their hipster credentials by partnering with other experimental groups like Merzbow, Sun 0))), and Keijo Haino.

One reason the band is so interesting is their uncharacteristic lineup, featuring female guitarist Wata, double bassist Takeshi, and drummer Atsuo. This formation allows them to explore a range of musical sounds, ranging from Sabbath-style riffs to deep pulsing drones, and more conventional rock tracks. On occasion, they have even employed The Cult's Ian Astbury on backing tracks.

In concert, the band will surely deliver a challenging, blistering set of beats and rhythms that encompass every musical genre in the past 50 years. All of this will be done behind a curtain of fog and stage lights. And for those down south, Boris will also perform at the Megaport Festival in Kaohsiung next Saturday. ■
