Updated Friday, February 5, 2010 2:12 pm TWN, By Huang Ya-shih and Deborah Kuo, CNA Piano duo from Taiwan to perform at Vatican celebrationsLarry Yu-yuan Wang, Taiwan's ambassador to the Holy See, said he was asked by the council's chairman Zygmunt Zimowski to invite Wille and Yeh as guest performers at the event. Wang said the invitation underlines the Holy See's recognition of Taiwan's musicians and marks the first time that musicians from Taiwan will perform in Vatican City. The duo is expected to perform music by Bach, Brahms, Edvard Grieg and Francis Poulenc at the function. Yeh also plans to play pieces by renowned Taiwanese composer Chen Yang, Wang said. Yeh, born in the southern Taiwan county of Kaohsiung, was a child prodigy who went on to study at the Mozart Academy in Salzburg, Austria, and to later learn from world-class masters such as Hans Leygraf, Kurt Leimer and Jacob Lateiner. Wille is a German who came to Taiwan at the age of 23 to teach, soon after he graduated from Staatlich Hochschule Fur Musik Hannover. He went on to obtain a doctorate in piano performance at the Manhattan School of Music, New York. The couple has traveled to Europe, South Africa, North America, Russia and Latin America on performance tours, and have received rave reviews from local critics. They recently celebrated their 30th anniversary as a duo. The Pontifical Council for Health Care Workers will host a three-day activity Feb. 9-11 to mark its 25th founding anniversary.
