Updated Thursday, August 14, 2008 0:00 am TWN, CNA Taitung music festival to begin August 16There will be a series of performances by local and foreign individuals and independent groups, including many of Taiwan’s aboriginal musicians, as well as more than 10 top reggae bands from Japan and the Philippines, such as Machaco, Papa-Ugee and Tropical Depression, the official said. The two-week festival, with major music performances being staged on two weekends, will also feature various music workshops to be hosted by both local and foreign musicians, along with several handicraft fairs showcasing local artists’ creations. The county has diverse musical resources thanks to its abundant aboriginal cultures. About 30 percent of the county’s population are aboriginal people, representing six different tribes. The county’s aboriginal music stunned the world music scene with the theme song for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, which was titled “Jubilant Drinking Song” and was sung by Amis musician Difang Duana.
