Updated Wednesday, December 16, 2009 10:39 am TWN, Reuters Charles Dickens tops the British box officeThe classic tale of Ebenezer Scrooge's conversion from miser to benefactor made 1.5 million pounds (US$2.43 million) in its sixth week of UK release, lifting it up from second place, according to data from Screen International. “Where the Wild Things Are” came in at two with the tale of a boy trying to bring happiness to a magic kingdom, but failed to break the million-pound mark. Up one at three was “Planet 51,” the story of an alien race living the life of 1950s America, while last week's chart-topper, horror thriller “Paranormal Activity,” was down at four. “The Twilight Saga: New Moon,” which registered one of the year's highest UK box office openings at 11.68 million pounds, was down two at five. “Nativity,” with two schools competing through Christmas plays, clawed back up a place to six, just above Gerard Butler as the “Law Abiding Citizen” avenging the murder of his wife and daughter, who slipped to seven from five. Disaster movie “2012” was down two spots at eight, with Cameron Diaz and James Marsden in “The Box” slipping a place to ninth. “A Serious Man” by Joel and Ethan Coen, a black comedy set on campus in 1967, stayed at 10 for a third week.
