Oscar-winning effects specialist Winston dies

LOS ANGELES -- Oscar-winning visual effects designer Stan Winston has died after a seven-year battle with multiple myeloma, according to a statement Monday from his studio.

Winston, 62, died Sunday evening at his Malibu home. He was famous for his pioneering visual effects work, which yielded him Oscars for Aliens (1986), Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1992), and Jurassic Park (1993). Winston received his star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame in 2001 and recently worked on the blockbuster Iron Man. “Stan contributed to some of the greatest movie characters in motion-picture history,” said Phil Tippett, who shared a visual effects Oscar with Winston on Jurassic Park. “His loss is a great one, and he will be missed.”
