Pink grows more prominent in interior decoration

FRANKFURT, Germany -- Pink is more than the color of choice for Barbie dolls and U.S. socialite Paris Hilton: it's now turning up as a trend color in kitchen utensils that tourists will be dying to buy in European stores.

Designers regard pink as a versatile highlight color for interior decoration.

Pink can be very elegant especially in combination with wood, says Nicolette Naumann, vice president of Germany's consumer goods trade fair Ambiente in Frankfurt. The trend has managed to avoid Miss Piggy pink and instead has gone for a soft candyfloss hue.

"It might sound flashy but it's not — and it doesn't come across like kitsch either," says Naumann.

Along with pink-accented furniture at the recent fair, exhibitors displayed all kinds of glassware, porcelain and kitchen utensils.

Color was on show almost everywhere in the cooking section: "There are lots more colorful knives," said Naumann. Thanks to advances in technology, manufacturers can now coat knife blades in paint that does not peel off and pink is one of the colors they have chosen.

Many of the traditionally white kitchen appliances at the fair were also very colorful.
