HONG KONG--Hong Kong International Airport handled a record single-day high of 1,081 flights Sunday, with Taipei being the most popular destination of its extra flights, the Civil Aviation Department (CAD) said yesterday.
The number represents a noticeable rise compared with the daily average of 957 flights at the airport and was 24 flights more than the latest record posted in January, the CAD said.
With Christmas and the New Year holiday around the corner, more airplanes have landed on and departed from the airport in recent days, the CAD said, noting that most extra flights were operated to fly passengers to cities in Northeast Asia.
Among those cities, Taipei has been the most popular destination, followed by Seoul and Manila, it said.
Last year, over 350,000 airplanes arrived at and took off from the Hong Kong airport, making it one of the world's busiest airports.
