2012 Kuandu Arts Festival kicks off

As annual event held by Taipei National University of the Arts (TNUA, 國立臺北藝術大學) since 1993, the Kuandu Arts Festival (關渡藝術節) covers a wide range of music, theater, dance, exhibitions, animation, outdoor sculpting and other forms of art displayed on campus from now until Oct. 28. The popular event provides visitors interested in art and culture with a rare opportunity to meet renowned artists from more than 15 countries and to participate in over 100 programs revolving around this year's theme: action, creation and transformation.

Stage Performance & Dance

Combining a variety of artistic disciplines with diverse materials, the Kuandu Arts Festival showcases works from around the world, including French “Soapéra,” an abstract dance piece that utilizes huge amounts of soap bubbles and visual art. “I Think It's Hamlet” from South Africa focuses on the issues of suicide and AIDS in Africa.

In addition, Taiwanese choreographer Tsai Hui-chen (蔡慧貞) and Italian dancer Francesco D'Astici will be presenting their first production, “The Door,” during the festival.

Modern & Traditional Music

Organized by TNUA's Department of Music, the Alumni Chamber Music Selection Plan has invited many outstanding alumni to perform a series of chamber music favorites, including “The Magic of Happiness,” “The Hearts of Women” and “Resplendent Sounds.” Teachers and students of the Department of Traditional Music will also gather to perform “Nanguan Opera” as well as “lecTrad...Fantasia - Hsi-Jong Wang and Composers” with composers from countries around Asia.

Exhibitions, Films & Animation

Hosted by Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts (KMOFA, 關渡美術館), the exhibition “Artist in Wonderland” features the joint efforts of 10 artists and 10 curators. Besides, the Department of Filmmaking will launch the exhibitions of “Student Film Exhibition,” “Famous Filmmakers,” “Indian Films” and “Student Films of Asia” for the fourth Kuandu Film Festival in Taiwan. ■
