Pineapple cakes topped the list of 10 selected foods and places to visit. Other items and places considered highly representative of Taipei and the best that the city has to offer include: the locally made “Baozhong” tea, the National Palace Museum, Taipei 101, night markets, beef noodle soup, green bean cakes, steamed dumplings, food marinated with a special sauce known as “lu wei” and meat products, the commerce office's chief Liu Chia-chun said. A second contest scheduled to run from August 1 through 25 will allow voters to select the best shops in Taipei that sell the 10 selected products or places. The two online competitions are aimed at promoting the various types of food and diverse culture in the city, Liu said. Officials hope the selections, together with the 2009 Deaflympics in September and the 2010 Garden and Horticulture Exposition slated for November, can introduce Taipei City to thousands of visitors who will flood into the city at that time. More than 5,500 participants from 81 countries are expected to attend the 2009 Deaflympics, which will take place in Taipei City from September 5 to 15. Subscribe to The China Post and save 25%.
