Michelle Yeoh returns for next 'Crouching Tiger'

There is still no official confirmation on the Malaysian filmstar's role, but reports from Beijing, where she was attending a promotional event, stated that she was preparing for the filming.

The buzz is that the original movie's Oscar-award winning director Ang Lee would not be involved this time.

Entertainment news website Jaynestars.com reported that The Weinstein Company would begin filming the sequel in May with director Ronny Yu of “The Bride with White Hair” fame taking over and John Fusco as scriptwriter.

The sequel will be based on Iron Knight, Silver Vase, the final book of the Crane Iron series penned by the late Wang Du Lu.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, which won four Academy Awards including the coveted Best Foreign Language Film after being nominated in 10 categories back in 2001, was based on the fourth book in the pentalogy.

It is not known whether famed Hong Kong actor Chow Yun-Fat will reprise his role in flashbacks, since he was killed in the finale of the original movie with a poisoned dart.

One of the most influential kung fu movies of modern times, it garnered US$128 million at the U.S. box office to become the highest-grossing foreign language film in American history, although it was completely shot in Mandarin.

The film also further cemented Yeoh as one of the most bankable stars to have successfully crossed over to Hollywood from the Hong Kong film industry, where she is already a household name.

She was nominated for best leading actress in the British Academy Film Awards (Bafta), the British version of the Oscars, as well as the Hong Kong Film Awards and the Golden Horse Awards.

Yeoh was recently in the spotlight when she hinted that wedding bells were not too far off after being engaged to International Automobile Federation president Jean Todt since 2005.
