Taiwanese singer Tsai Chin keeps up with the timesHalf an hour after the Cathay Pacific flight took off from Hong Kong for Taipei, sparks started flying out of one of the engines. “The plane tilted a little to the left, so I kept on praying for a safe landing,” she recalls in Mandarin. But now, the 52-year-old says there is no reason she should be afraid of flying as she has “already handed her life over to God.” She says over the telephone from Taipei: “I admit I was quite nervous then but there's really no reason to be scared about plane rides in future. “Besides, when you have a job like mine where you must constantly travel the globe to perform, how can you avoid flying?” The plane was instructed to turn back for Hong Kong and it landed safely. None of the 377 passengers was injured. Tsai, who is known for her rich, mellow vocals, will be holding a concert at the Compass Ballroom at Resorts World Convention Centre in Singapore on Saturday. Her previous performance here was at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in May last year. She was divorced from the late movie director Edward Yang in 1995 after 10 years of marriage. She has 50 albums under her belt and her hits include Just Like Your Tenderness, and The Forgotten Time, which was featured in the 2002 hit Hong Kong movie Infernal Affairs. After a career of more than 30 years, Tsai says her songs will live on. “I sing classics and classics should never be forgotten. These songs are like treasures for the Chinese people,” she says.
