Jackie Chan to sue over donation claim

BEIJING -- Jackie Chan is suing a Chinese newspaper and taking a foundation to task over reported claims that he failed to honor a promise to donate to the reconstruction of a school toppled by the Sichuan earthquake of 2008.

The Shanghai Overseas Chinese News last week said the actor in May last year had promised to donate part of his earnings from his 2010 film Little Big Soldier for the rebuilding but has not paid up so far.

The movie had made 153 million yuan (US$22.5 million) just a month after it opened last February.

Chan made the pledge when he visited the school during the first anniversary of the quake at Wenchuan county, Sichuan.

But neither his name nor that of his Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation Beijing is on the website of the Overseas Chinese Economic and Cultural Foundation of China, which is overseeing donations to Beichuan Middle School.

An employee of the foundation reportedly said it once wrote to Chan about the matter, but got no response.

The principal of the school also told the newspaper that it has not received any donation from Chan.

Chan's camp has, however, hit back. A spokesman for his production company Jackie Chan China was yesterday quoted as saying on Tencent web portal that the actor will definitely honor his promises.

A spokesman for his foundation also said Chan had not paid up as he had not yet received his bonus from the movie.

She said lawyers have been contacted about suing the newspaper.

Both the Overseas Chinese Economic and Cultural Foundation and the school will be held accountable for their claims.

“We asked them to send over the donation agreement which should contain the building plans for the school. But they have not done so,” she claimed.

uggghh...the way I understand it, little big soldier was only released early this year. It usually takes at least a year for the earning reports to be finalized...I believe Mr. Chan will honor his promises...if not, well he surely will have the whole world watching over his shoulders...

The film was only released early this year...how come you expect Jackie to start making donation now? Usually it will take one year at the soonest to have all the earnings, domestically and internationally, properly calculated...then you can start asking him where the money is...if he still has not come up with it, say in February 2011, then you can start going after his neck!
