Local publishers urged to join Frankfurt Book Fair

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Government Information Office, which is responsible for organizing Taiwan's participation in the upcoming Frankfurt Book Fair 2009, is urging local publishing companies to apply for a place in the Taiwan pavilion at the fair.

Cheng Cheng-chun, director of the GIO's Department of Publications, and Lin Wen-chih, CEO of the Taipei Book Fair Foundation which is co-organizing the Taiwan pavilion, made the call at a news conference Wednesday.

Cheng said that as China has been selected as the Guest of Honor this year at the world's largest book fair, Taiwan will take the opportunity to push its Chinese-language publications into the international limelight.

The Taiwan pavilion, under the theme Creative Taiwan, will present the boom and diversification of Taiwan's publishing industry, according to Chen. Lung Ying-tai and Wang Te-wei, two celebrated local authors, will make public appearances at the pavilion during the fair to help give visibility to the Taiwan displays, he said.

Cheng further said that the GIO hopes that the displays will help to highlight the achievements and characteristics of Taiwan's publishing industry and boost sales of royalty rights among publishers from home and abroad.

The Taiwan pavilion will be comprised of 12 special zones, including "Only in Taiwan, " which will feature Chinese-language publications that were published in Taiwan but were not allowed in China; a poetry zone, which will showcase collections of poems by the major poets in Taiwan since the 1960s; a novel zone; and a zone for design books, Lin said.

Local publishing companies that are interested in participating in the event are encouraged to download application forms at http://www.taipeibookfair.org/, or call 02-2767-1268 (Ext. 103) for more information, he added.

Last year, Taiwan's pavilion at the book fair brought together 87 publishing companies and showcased 651 works, including literature books, illustrations and comics, and publications that featured Taiwan's diverse culture and natural beauty.

The Frankfurt Book Fair will be held this year in the German city from Oct.14-18.
