Children recite classical literature in Penghu

PENGHU, Taiwan -- Some 1,300 children participated in a classical literature recitation activity in offshore Penghu County yesterday, doing their best to recite old and ancient texts they didn’t necessarily understand.

The recitation, held at Wen Ao Elementary School in Penghu’s capital Makung, was divided into two categories: Chinese classical literature and English classical literature.

Although there was no age limit for joining in the activity, all of the participants were students under 12 — including some still in kindergarten or nursery school.

For the Chinese classical literature recitation, the children selected one of 33 passages from the I Ching (Book of Changes), Lun Yu (the Analects of Confucius), San Zi Jing (the Three Character Classic), the philosophy of Laozi and Zhuangzi and poems from the Tang Dynasty.

For the English classical literature recitation, the children chose one of 12 passages from William Shakespeare’s sonnets and “A Midsummer Night’s Dreams” play.
