Influencing the future direction of design

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- We often hear that all ideas change the world in some small way, even though not all ideas are "world changing." Still, we need these kinds of small world-changing ideas because the world still needs a lot of changing.

The annual international Golden Pin Concept Design Award (金點概念設計獎) aims to do just that, by driving new trends in global design. This concept design competition, which earlier released a poster by designer Aaron Nieh (聶永貞) that promotes its call for submissions, offers a total of more than NT$1 million (approx. US$32,700) in cash prizes to its Best Design and Award winners.

Already widely celebrated in Taiwan and pegged as one of the region's rising stars, brand and graphic designer Nieh has created a one-of-a-kind poster that hints at the revolutionary work of artist Marcel Duchamp and industrial designer Philippe Starck, targeting designers of the new generation.

The poster is themed on the phrase, "in craziness lies genius." Nieh encourages entrants to pursue original ideas that will influence the future direction of design. Hidden away in the poster's design is carefully crafted wordplay that can only be detected if the Chinese characters are read in Hokkien dialect: "Wei lai ni lai wei" (未來你來未), which means, "Are you ready for the future?"

"The perspective of a 'crazy' designer is unusual. For example, they see lines, dots, and space in a unique way. I hope that the people who see this poster will be driven to reflect on their own vision and challenge themselves to strive for something different," he said.

As one of the only international concept design awards based in Taiwan, the Golden Pin is open to students, individual designers, and companies of all experience levels around the world who have society-changing ideas and are devoted to innovative design development. Product and project design concepts can be submitted under four design disciplines: Product Design, Visual Communication Design, Packaging Design and Spatial Design. Entries for the award are accepted from now until June 28. ■
