'BALGOA' showcases aboriginal art

The latest contemporary art exhibition “BALGOA” which opened yesterday at Taipei Fine Arts Museum (TFAM), features 26 indigenous acrylic paintings and engravings created by Australian aborigines.

The artworks, created by indigenous residents of Balgo Hills — a vast desert in the northeast of Western Australia — aims to infuse Taiwan's burgeoning indigenous art scene with contemporary international offerings.

Australian indigenous dance group “Nunukul Yuggera” opened the exhibition with show stopping traditional performances, which prompted a crowd of journalists to clamor for an encore.

“Balgo Hills is the second birthplace of Australian indigenous contemporary art, which cultivated dozens of local artists in 1980,” said Richard Mathews, deputy representative of Australian Commerce and Industry Office. “BALGOA” displays some of the best art works from Australian indigenous artists,” he added. Hsieh Hsiao-yun, director of TFAM warmly invited everyone to enjoy the creative art exhibition. “This exhibition offers us a deeper understanding about Australian culture and inspires Taiwan's contemporary art scene,” Hsieh said.

The exhibition will run from now until Feb. 21 at TFAM.
