Met Opera tops 2007 U.S. arts fundraising

The Metropolitan Opera led all U.S. arts organizations in fundraising from private sources with US$128.1 million in 2007, according to a survey of 400 nonprofits by the Chronicle of Philanthropy.

The New York opera company was followed by its host organization, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, with US$123.9 million; Miami’s New World Symphony with US$85.2 million; the San Francisco Opera Association with US$70.7 million; and the Smith Center for the Performing Arts in Las Vegas with US$58.4 million.

The Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens in San Marino, California, brought in US$52.3 million last year. The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington received US$51 million, according to the study, which will be published in the Oct. 30 issue of the Chronicle.

Donations to all 400 nonprofits in the survey — including social-service, health and educational organizations — grew by 4.5 percent to US$72.5 billion from 2006. That growth won’t be “enough to keep up with rising demand for aid” and “increasing expenses” nonprofits face, the Chronicle said.
