15th century relief falls at the NY Metropolitan

NEW YORK -- New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art reported Tuesday that a 15th century glazed terra cotta relief sculpture of St. Michael the Archangel by Andrea della Robbia came loose from its wall mounts and fell onto a stone floor.

The damage can be repaired so that the artwork can be shown publicly again, the museum said in a news release.

The 62-by-32-inch relief, which has been on view in the museum’s European Paintings and Decorative Arts Galleries since 1996, fell during the night, the statement said.

An investigation was launched to determine the cause of the accident. Wall mounts and pedestals are regularly inspected for structural integrity, the museum said.
