George Clooney just sold a tequila company for A BILLION DOLLARS

SAN FRANCISCO — Hollywood star George Clooney has sold the Casamigos tequila company he co-founded in a deal worth up to US$1 billion, British beverages giant Diageo said Wednesday.

"If you asked us four years ago if we had a billion dollar company, I don't think we would have said yes," Clooney said in a statement quoted by U.S. media.

"This reflects Diageo's belief in our company and our belief in Diageo. But we're not going anywhere. We'll still be very much a part of Casamigos. Starting with a shot tonight. Maybe two."

Diageo, which also owns the labels Johnnie Walker, Smirnoff and Guinness, said the initial consideration had been set at US$700 million, with an additional US$300 million to be paid over ten years dependent on performance.

Clooney founded Casamigos, or "house of friends," with his friend Rande Gerber — the husband of model Cindy Crawford and who has a holiday house next door to Clooney in Mexico — and businessman Mike Meldman in 2013.

Since then it has become the "fastest growing super-premium tequila brand in the U.S.," according to Diageo.
