[Updated] Truck driver in crash that killed police officer tests positive for drugs

The driver of trailer truck that hit a freeway police patrol car in a fatal accident on Monday tested positive for illegal drugs Tuesday.

Traces of amphetamine were found in a urine sample of the 41-year-old driver on Monday, which means that he had taken the illegal drug within three days, authorities said.

The driver initially denied being under the influence of drugs when the accident took place but later admitted to have taken drugs five days before.

He was released on bail of NT$100,000 on Tuesday.

Lin Feng-shi, chief prosecutor at the Hsinchu District Prosecutors Office, accused the driver of taking drug before the accident and of driving while fatigued when the crash took place.

The driver had driven over 600 kilometers between the early hours of Monday and 10 a.m. when the accident took place.

Forty-three-year-old Police Officer Chen Chi-rui was killed and another officer, 26-year-old officer Yang Yu-shen, was injured after the truck hit their car on a section of National Freeway No. 3 near Hsinchu on Monday.

The two officers were supervising the towing of a van with a flat tire at the 108-kiometer mark on the southbound side of freeway, when the truck ran into the patrol car from behind and then the van.

The three passengers and the driver of the van were also wounded in the incident.

Chen suffered from severe injuries and later succumbed to his wounds. Yang also sustained multiple injuries and was found covered in blood.

The driver of the truck claimed that he was avoiding a car when his truck careened across the slow lane to the shoulder. His account, however, did not match with the video recorded from the rear surveillance camera of the patrol car, local media reported.
